Save Money with a Programmable Thermostat
There are a number of ways most people can save money on their monthly energy bills. Having an energy audit is one common idea, and people who follow the advice of the audit and replace caulking and other forms of insulation will no doubt realize good savings. Probably the first thing to do in this regard, however, is to have a programmable thermostat installed to control your heating and air conditioning systems.
In the old days people didn’t think twice about heating a home at the same temperature during the night or during regular periods of time when everyone in the household was gone to work and school, for example.
Those days of taking low energy prices for granted are over, however. With much higher commodity prices in general and energy prices in particular, few people can afford to just waste money on energy bills. And few people want to do this in any case, as everyone is aware that natural resources are finite and expensive. One way to deal with these facts is to simply ask your home heating contractor about installing a programmable thermostat to control your home’s heating and cooling systems.
These products are not very expensive, and there is a good range of choices for between $100-200. That may seem like a lot, but this is an investment that will pay for itself in short order, and any savings realized after that are for free. The easiest thing to do is set a higher temperature in the house for when you are up and about and a lower one for when
everyone is asleep. In our home we have the thermostat programmed for 68 degrees F during the day, and starting at 10pm the thermostat changes the control to 62 degrees. We never notice the difference at all. This turns into considerable savings in heating bills over the long haul. Most units will also allow for other programming options. For example, many households are not at home during the day when both parents are off to work and the kids are in school. So lowering the room
temperature of the house when everyone is gone and switching to a higher temperature an hour or so before everyone returns is a good idea.
So if you reside in the Denver, Colorado area, call one of our experienced heating and air conditioning contractors and inquire about having your programmable thermostat installed if you don’t have one already.
